Tindouf: US keen concerns about human rights violations

At the time when the UN Security Council is discussing the Western Sahara issue, human rights violation in Tindouf camps, in Algeria, are more than ever in the agenda. The Polisario’s denial of the most basic rights to Sahrawis in Tindouf camps, in particular their right to freedom of movement and expression, has given rise to some reactions in the American Congress. A group of congressmen, Democrats and Republicans together, have thus addressed a letter to the State Secretary, Hillary Clinton. In their message, they ask the Chief of the American diplomacy to support “the legitimate rights” of the Sahrawi population living under the Stalinian control of the Polisario, with the blessing of the Algerian generals.

It is absolutely necessary to « take account of the preoccupations expressed about the situation of human rights in Tindouf camps, in Algeria, so as to respond to the legitimate rights of the populations », insist the congressmen. The American congressmen have, meanwhile, given their firm support to the declarations made by Hillary Clinton, on the 23rd March. The US State Secretary has thus reiterated the strong support of Washington to the autonomy plan for the Sahara proposed by Morocco. “We have already announced our conviction that the Moroccan autonomy plan constituted a serious, realist and credible proposal”, stated Hillary Clinton. For her, it concerns “a persistent position of the American foreign policy”, elaborated from a long time in the total conviction that this plan would allow the Sahrawi populations to “manage their own affairs in peace and dignity”.
